You can now run Android 6.0 Marshmallow on your PC with Android Android-x86 6.0 RC1

Chih-Wei Huang from the Android-x86 project proudly announced the availability of the first Release Candidate (RC) build of the upcoming Android-x86 6.0 operating system. It is designed to run on most computer with 32-bit x86 or 64-bit x86_64 processors. Android-x86 is the original project that allows users to run Android on their PCs.

Android-x86 is an open source and freely distributed project that targets to port the latest version of the Android mobile operating system created by Google for several smartphones and tablets, as well as many other wearables and embedded devices, to x86 PCs, including any laptop and desktop computer that are available. It’s a developed OS that you install much the same way you would Ubuntu or another Linux distribution.

Android-x86 6.0 has been in development for the past few months, but there haven’t been any Beta or RC releases until now, only the regular daily builds.

Based on the latest Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow-MR2 release (technical version number is 6.0.1_r46) of the mobile operating system, Android-x86 6.0 RC1 is powered Linux kernel 4.4.12 LTS. The latest version includes new features such as support for SecureBoot (UEFI) support, OpenGL ES 3.x hardware acceleration on computers with AMD or NVIDIA graphics, as well as support for both 64-bit and 32-bit kernel and userspace.

It also supports most of the features that one would want from an Android device, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, audio, multi-touch, sensors, camera, an Ethernet. Additionally, it can automatically support SD cards and external USB drives, along with ARM and AArch64 (ARM64) architectures which through a native bridge mechanism can be enabled via Settings -> Apps Compatibility.

The upgrade process from previous Android-x86 releases has been enhanced as well, and when you try to upgrade to Android-x86 6.0, the respective EXT2 or EXT3 partition will be automatically changed to the EXT4 format. However, there are a few known issues with the RC, including problems with suspend and resume on some devices, and issues with Google Play Services in some situations.

A release candidate for Android-x86 6.0 is now available for download here.
